As of May 29th 2009 the Point Salines International Airport will be renamed the Maurice Bishop International Airport. Plans for the official ceremony carded for May 30th were disclosed on Tuesday, during a press conference hosted by Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Honorable Peter David and supported by members of the Airport Re-naming Committee.
Minister David stated that he is indeed proud to be a part of the Committee spearheading the initiative in 2009 marking the 25th anniversary of the commissioning of the International Airport.
He told the gathering “we see the renaming of the airport as part of celebrating our history ‘The Minister added “ If an airport was not built, Grenada would have found itself in a similar position to that of St Vincent who is struggling against difficult financial times to build an international Airport.”
The Minister reiterated governments commitment to public dialogue on the issue stating that the renaming of the airport was “Part of our campaign pledge and has been sounded for many years and should not come as a surprise, to anyone.”
The Minister further stated that he welcomes the views of nationals on the matter since it is important to debate and confront our history.
Activities leading up to the renaming include a logo competition which is open to Grenadians at home and abroad and an essay competition among the Primary and Secondary schools
Tuesday’s press conference was attended by the Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Tourism Arlene Buckmire Outram, Andre Cherman, Chairman of the Grenada Airport Authority, Lester Andall General Manager of the Point Salines International Airport and Feron Lowe, Policy advisor to the Ministry of Agriculture and member of the Airport Re-naming Committee. .
