MP recommits to securing more facilities for youth development

St. George’s, April 3, 2012 – The parliamentary representative for the Town of St. George has pledged his ongoing commitment to supporting youth development in his constituency and across Grenada.

Hon. Peter David reiterated his commitment in remarks at the closing ceremony of a football tournament at the Queen’s Park playing field, adjacent to Wesley College.

Lights were installed around the field as a result of discussions between GRENLEC and David, who is also Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture.

The nighttime tournament, which began in February, was organized by Queen’s Park Rangers (QPR) Football Club and sponsored by Sun Motors.

“It is wonderful to have lights on the field. This has allowed our young people more time to recreate and to participate in sporting activities. Youth – in the Town of St. George and elsewhere – have my support in these development efforts,’’ MP David said.

In the final games on March 30, Grand Mal and QPR were the big winners.

QPR defeated Mt. Moritz 4-nil to capture third place and a cash prize of $1,500. Mt. Moritz received $1,000.

Grand Mal – the 2012 Sun Motors QPR Major League Football winners – grabbed $5,000, the champion’s trophy and medals, following their one-nil victory over St. David’s Lions.

Grand Mal’s Tyrone Toussaint was adjudged the tournament’s most valuable player. Other individual awards were presented to Irvin Smith of QPR as the best defender, and Andre Baptiste of St. David’s as the best goalkeeper.

The St. David’s team, as the first runner up, received $3,500.

Prizes were distributed by MP David, representatives of QPR Football Club and Grenada Football Association President, Cheney Joseph, and General Secretary Victor Daniel.

David congratulated the players on their “spirited effort,’’ and thanked Sun Motors for its sponsorship of the competition.

“Sun Motors has always been interested in sports and will continue to support sports wherever it can,’’ he said. “I also want to commend everyone else who, in one way or another, contributed to making the Sun Motors QPR Major League Football Competition a success.’’
