Mother’s Day Celebration in Montreal

Montreal, Canada May 11, 2011: Grenadians in Montreal celebrated A Mother’s Day Brunch and Variety Show last Sunday May 8, 2011 at Le Manoir Hall in the NDG, Montreal. The well attended event was coordinated by the Grenada Nationals Association of Montreal Inc. (GNAM) in association with Spice Promotion Youth and Cultural Organization (SPYCO).

Mr. Kenny Calder, President of the GNAM gave the welcome address then introduced the MC for the afternoon; Ms. Tesfa (Aki) Peterson of SPYCO the newly formed Montreal based Grenadian Youth Organization.

Among the guests present were Mrs Germaine Calder mother of the GNAM Inc. President, Mr Kenny Calder, Mrs Gemma Rayburn-Baynes and Mr Bernard Baynes from taste of the Caribbean, Members of the Montreal based Grenadian folk group; the Grenada Ensemble, Mr Theodore Blaize Chairman, and other members of the NDC Support Group, as well as Leonard Jarvis, President of the Antigua & Barbuda Association.

Poems, letters and songs serenading all Mothers present were delivered by performers, from as young as 5 years old to a 90-year old great-grandmother who delivered an instructive rendition of Bing Crosby’s 1944 “Swinging on a star” (you might grow up to be a mule). She was also recognized earlier in the afternoon for the mother present with the oldest “child” – a 65 year old son.  The audience was also treated to a theatrical performance by the renowned Montreal Grenada Ensemble.

The Honorary Consul for Grenada in Montreal, Mr. Leonard A. Wharwood Jr. spoke briefly on the continued tradition of Grenadians paying tribute to Mothers everywhere and thanked the Mothers present for their contribution and service  to the building of  a strong community base in Montreal. He also thanked the Grenada Nationals Association Inc. for their role in spearheading the annual Mother Day event.
