Ministry of Finance opening office at Excel Plaza in Grand Anse

St. George’s, November 12, 2012 – The Ministry of Finance is about to open another sub-office geared at collecting revenue payable to the government of Grenada.

The latest will be at Grand Anse in St. George’s. Similar offices exist across the country, including at the Ministerial Complex compound in Tanteen.

The Ministry of Finance’s Grand Anse Revenue Office will be at Excel Plaza.

A “coming soon’’ sign is posted on the door of the office which was once occupied by telecommunications provider, LIME.

There has been no tenant in the space since LIME vacated more than two years ago and moved to the nearby Spiceland Mall.

Excel Plaza is owned by businessman Kent Joseph, a longtime member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Joseph and another businessman and founding NDC member, former MP Phinsley St. Louis, were actively involved in a move that resulted in the expulsion of 10 people – including five sitting parliamentarians – from the party.

The expulsion took place at the NDC’s September 30 annual convention.

“The honour to move a motion to expel five sitting Members of Parliament from the governing National Democratic Congress fell on the shoulders of founding member of the 25-year-old party, businessman Phinsley St. Louis,’’ the NDC said a news release following the convention.

The party said the convention also rallied behind “stalwarts’’ such St. Louis, who was elected a trustee, and Joseph, who was given the position of Deputy Chairman.

Joseph is reported to be one of the lead organizers behind a campaign to garner support for Education Minister, Franka Alexis-Bernadine, to be the NDC’s candidate in the next general election.

Former NDC General Secretary Peter David, who was among the MPs expelled from the party in September, has been the parliamentary representative for the Town of St. George since 2003. He promises to seek reelection.

Ministry of Finance sources say a committee had recommended against renting the Excel Plaza office.

However, one insider who asked to remain anonymous, said the recommendation was overruled by Finance Minister Nazim Burke and an agreement to rent the Grand Anse Revenue Office at Excel Plaza was signed in April.

“The rent is about $18,000 per month,’’ the insider said.
