Minimum Wage to be Examined

A National Wage Advisory Committee is currently investigating the conditions of employment in the areas of trade, industry and occupation in Grenada. The Committee will examine the working environment and wages of workers in  the lower income bracket,  with the aim of making recommendations as to the minimum rate of wages which should be payable.

Trained data collectors are visiting Work Places Island wide to gather information regarding, current lowest wage paid, working hours, benefits provided by employers.

The categories being looked into are:

Shift Workers                           Non-unionised workers in Super Markets

Industrial Workers                    Non-unionised workers in the Hospitality Industry

            Security Guards                                    Non-unionised workers in Stores

            Domestic Workers                   Private Estates (Agriculture)

            Care Givers of the Elderly         Construction Workers

            Workers in Bakeries                 Vehicle Drivers

            Clerical Workers                                  Bus Conductors

The Wages Advisory committee is a tripartite body headed by former Labour Commissioner and government representative, Mr. Abel Newton, Mr. Anslem De Bourg, who is also a Government’s representative on the committee, Mr. Gordon Raeburn and Mr. George Mason representing the Trades Union Council and Mrs. Cisly Gabriel and Mr. Elvin Chitan representing the Grenada Employers’ Federation.

Minister of Labour, Hon. Glyins Roberts, endorsed the Wages Advisory Committee which was established in April 2008 under the employment act of 1999. The Committee will submit its report in approximately six (6) months..
