St. George’s, September 19, 2011 – The National Democratic Congress (NDC) wants to salute the government for considering the plight of some of the country’s lowest paid workers, including security guards and domestic employees within households.
The NDC’s statement, issued by the party’s Public Relations Officer, comes against the background of the recent announcement that Cabinet had agreed to a minimum wage increase for domestic workers, to bring their monthly pay to $750. The proposal is also to move the minimum pay for security guards from $4 per hour to $8 an hour.
The increases are to take effect after being scrutinized by the Ministry of Legal Affairs and presented to the Houses of Parliament for debate and passage.
“These workers have been making sacrifices for their employers and the country for many years. We don’t think it is too much to ask that a sacrifice be made to assist them by providing them with a more livable wage,’’ said NDC PRO, Senator Arley Gill.
Further, said Sen. Gill, “it is unbelievable that in almost a decade, security guards have not received as much as a penny increase on their salary. The government’s proposal pay hike is, therefore, a step in the right direction and a laudable move.’’
