Material assistance to students

St. George’s, August 27, 2010 – Dozens of teenagers heading to secondary school in September have been given material assistance from Hon. Peter David and members of his Town of St. George constituency.

At separate events on August 25, Mr. David congratulated the students and encouraged parents to support their children in their educational pursuits.

In one event, he presented students with vouchers for shopping for school supplies. The MP and Minister of Foreign Affairs urged parents to allow their children to remain in school to finish their education.

“Do not take your kids out of school and say you can’t afford to send them. Big tragedy. Recognise, work and encourage them from now,’’ Mr. David said at the function hosted by members of the Town of St. George Constituency Group, including representatives of the River Road/Darbeau Community Development Organisation.

He added that “each generation must try to ensure that the generation that is coming is more successful than the previous.’’

At another smaller event, Mr. David presented a laptop computer to Khalil Buckmire, the top student of the St. George’s Anglican Senior – “Hindsey School’’ – in this year’s Common Entrance Examinations (CEE).

Buckmire’s 127.23 CEE score placed him fifth overall in the nation. Mr. David, a former student of St. George’s Anglican, had promised the laptop to Buckmire as a prize award.

The presentation of the computer was made in the presence of the boy’s parents, Hudson and Lorraine Buckmire, and grandmother Laura Christopher.

MP David, who is also General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress, commended young Buckmire.

“I want to wish you the best,’’ he told Buckmire, “and hope that you receive many more awards in the upcoming years and that ultimately, you will go to the one of the finest universities in the world.’’

The youngster, who will be attending Presentation Brothers’ College and plans on pursuing a career in Information Technology, expressed appreciation to Hon. David. “I want to say thanks to the minister for my laptop. I also want to say thanks to my parents for making this day a special occasion for me,’’ the boy said.

Lorraine Buckmire recalled the occasion on the release of the CEE results. “When the results came out, I was overwhelmed,’’ she said. “I was very, very happy for my boy.’’

The day after the two events with the students, Mr. David left Grenada for Morocco and Japan, saying the trip was part of an ongoing search to find resources for the development of the country.

“The Moroccans recently gave us 10 scholarships. I’m going to try to tie that up and try and get some more from the Japanese. The Moroccans promised us a million dollars. I’m going to try and see if I can come back with it,’’ the Foreign Minister said.

“So when you don’t see me sometimes, it’s not that I’m going and travel to play. I’m going to travel to try to get resources for the country.’’
