Maritime and government officials to hold citizens’ briefing May 21

St. George’s, May 20, 2010 – Officials of government and the Joint Boundary Commission will be visiting St. George’s South East on Friday, May 21. They’ll be meeting members of the community to discuss the historic maritime treaty that was signed last month between Grenada and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

The treaty was signed at an official ceremony on April 21 in Port of Spain by Grenada’s Prime Minister, Hon. Tillman Thomas, and Hon. Patrick Manning, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago.

The ceremony was attended by members of the Joint Boundary Commission that negotiated the agreement with Trinidad, as well as by Foreign Minister Peter David and by representatives of non-governmental organisation such as the trade union movement, the private sector, and the Grenada National Organisation of Women.

Since May 4, government has been visiting various communities in Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique to brief nationals on details of the treaty that delimits the maritime boundary between Grenada and its oil-rich CARICOM neighbor. The briefings have been led by Senator Arley Gill, a maritime law specialist who was a member of the Joint Boundary Commission.

Friday’s briefing in St. George’s South East begins 6.30 pm and will be held at the Marian Multipurpose Centre.

The treaty, which allows Grenada the opportunity to commercially explore and exploit all its marine resources, is a very important national issue, said Prime Minister Thomas.

“It’s a matter that has a lot to do with the future of our country and our development.  It’s something the Grenadian people recognize has benefits for Grenada and Grenadians,’’ the Prime Minister said.
