St. George’s, May 17, 2010 – Building supplies have arrived in Soubise, St. Andrew, where more than 50 residents will be employed in a housing construction project.
Beijing Construction and Engineering Group is undertaking the project, which also involves the building of homes in Mt. Gaye, St. George’s.
The joint Grenada/China initiative calls for the building of 361 housing units over an 18-month period.
Preparatory work for the project began about two months ago with the arrival of a Chinese construction crew. At the moment, Beijing Construction and Engineering is providing temporary employment to local residents in the offloading and storage of materials for the project.
Soubise, which has been allocated some 150 units, was recently visited by Housing Minister Hon. Alleyne Walker, who is also Parliamentary Representative for St. Andrew North-West.
Ministry of Housing officials say that among those targeted to benefit from the Soubise project are “informal residents’’ at Moon Shadow Park, persons living on the coastal area, and other vulnerable parishioners considered to be in “dire need of housing assistance.’’
