Lavaman, Shortpree capture soca titles

St. George’s, August 11, 2012 – Another champion will be crowned today, Saturday, August 11, in competitions of the 2012 carnival celebrations of the Spicemas Corporation (SMC).

Saturday evening will feature the top steelbands in competition in the National Panorama.

The latest carnival winners were announced early Saturday morning following the LIME-sponsored Groovy Soca Monarch and Power Soca Monarch competitions at the National Stadium in St. George’s.

Carriacou-born Shortpree comfortably won the Groovy Soca title with a score of 254 points.

He dethroned last year’s champion, Randy Isaac, who picked up 232 points.

Scholar, with 226 points, was third.

Lavaman, the Road March Champion of 2011, has followed it up with another major title this year.

He’s the 2012 Soca Monarch. His song, “Psycho,’’ gave him a one-point edge over second placed Boyzie in one of the most keenly contested Soca Monarch championships.

Terror Kid – last year’s Soca Monarch – was third.

Lavaman, who also received the “People’s Choice’’ award, has said that there is a simple philosophy behind what he does.

“Everything is believing,’’ said Lavaman, whose real name is Marcus James. “To all the youth, the same thing I will tell you – believe. Belief is everything. Once you believe, your journey can be good.’’

Other SMC carnival winners so far include Coyaba New Dimensions Steel Orchestra, the Bomb Tune champions of 2012;  Anisha David, who was crowned Carnival Queen on Thursday; and Republic Bank Angel Harps, which repeated this year as title holders of Junior Panorama.

Senior Angels Harps are defending champions in Saturday’s National Panorama that begins 8 pm at the stadium. They’ll be performing a James Clarkson composition titled, “Carenage on Fire.’’

Other steelbands in the competition tonight are New Dimensions; LIME Commancheros; Digicel Florida All Stars; Pan Ossia; Rainbow City All Stars; Grand Roy Pan Angels; and Calabash Pan Lovers.

A new feature of this year’s panorama is a concert that brings together leading Grenadian and Trinidadian soca artistes.
