The Grenada Athletic Association has selected eighteen athletes to represent Grenada at the Junior Carifta Games in St. Kitts from the 21st -24th March 2008.
The GAA Officials thinks that this is our best team since Hurricane Ivan and is hopeful that this team can amass the most medals since 2004 by winning fifteen (15) medals. The most medals ever won by Grenada at Carifta Games are twenty two in 2002 in the Bahamas.
World Youth silver medalist Kirani James would be leading Grenada’s charge to win fifteen medals when he seeks to defend his 400m title and to add another in the 200m boys under 17.
After his blistering performances at Intercol a couple days ago Kirani is set to lower USIAN BOLT’S 400m under 17 boys record of 47.33 secs. In fact, he has run faster (46.96) than the record last year at the World Youth Championships.
Other medal hopefuls include Shakir Simmons in the U20 boys Shot put. He has improved by leaps and bounds this year and should be on the podium. Wendell Modeste in the boys Heptathlon should keep our rich tradition in this event alive. Grenada has won this event five times in the last seven years. Both Emron Gibbs and Carron Isaac should be on the podium also in the boys U17 Javelin to regain our dominance in this event. Rondell Bartholomew can also surprise the region in the 400m U20 boys.
The Westerhall Secondary School duo of Jayon Creedland and Kellon Alexis can also do very well in the Discus and Shot Put. Also, the boys 4×100 and 4×400 teams should do well. Look out for Reon Radix in the boys 5000m and Kim Smart in 3000m. Both boys have excelled on the road this year and should endure to the podium.
In the girls category, Coleen Felix can win the Pentathlon and Javelin events and Antonia Wilson can reach the podium in the girls 3000m.
The Team would be accompanied by three officials:
- Ms. Denise Williams Manager
- Mr. Albert Joseph Coach
- Mr. Kerlon Peters Coach
The team is expected to leave here on Tuesday 18th March 2008 for St. Kitts.
