Dr Nicole Phillip-Dowe

St George’s, March 5, 2015 – Educator and eight-time Calypso Monarch of Trinidad & Tobago, Mighty Chalkdust, is coming to Grenada next week on an assignment with the Open Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI).

Chalkdust, whose real name is Hollis Liverpool, will be the first presenter in the inaugural “Carol Bristol Distinguished Lecture’’. He holds a PhD in history and ethnomusicology, and is an Assistant Professor at the University of the Virgin Islands.

The focus of his Grenada presentation will be on calypso and its contribution to national development, said Dr Nicole Phillip-Dowe.

“We are inviting the general public to come out and to be an active part of this lecture. There’ll be questions and answers afterwards,’’ said Phillip Dowe, head of the UWI Open Campus.

She said the annual lecture series, part of an outreach program of the Open Campus, will discuss things “that are important to Grenada’s culture, to its education system, to politics, to the environment’’.

Next week’s lecture by Chalkdust is Tuesday evening, March 10, at the Trade Centre Annex, Morne Rouge.

Carol Bristol, after the lecture series is named, is a former prominent attorney and cricket commentator who died last year.

Phillip-Dowe described Bristol as “a gentleman who contributed to the Open Campus’’.
