February 10, 2014: The Junior Murray Cricket Academy along with Made In Grenada hosted the first ever Junior Murray Celebrity Cricket Match on Sunday February 09th at the Progress Park in St. Andrew.
The game formed part of the festivities to commemorate Grenada’s 40th anniversary of Independence and the support for the game by the cricket-loving fans of Grenada, the comments of the Players and the general good-feeling that permeated the cool St. Andrew afternoon are all indicative of the tremendous success of this new initiative by one of Grenada’s most celebrated sporting heroes.
The Junior Murray Celebrity Team won the toss and chose to take first knock. Rawl Lewis and Ackeem Alexis opened the innings with Rawl making a brisk 45, Ackeem retiring out on 52 and Junior Murray making 24 not out. In response the Prime Minister’s team was 90 all out, with 2 wickets to Thomas Kentish, one each for Courtney Walsh, Rawl Lewis and Junior Murray.
Ackeem Alexis was awarded the Player of the Match for Junior’s team and Steve Mahon the Player of the Match for the Prime Minister’s team after a knock of 34 and 2 wickets.
Former President of the Grenada Cricket Association Mr. Walter St. John greeted both teams before match time. Also in attendance were former sporting stalwarts Alston George and Oswald Clovey along with Cabinet Secretary and former National Women’s Cricketer Ms. Nadica Mc Intyre.
