Joseph Says Stanford Superstars can do better

Coolidge, Antigua – 26 October 2008 – The Stanford Superstars comfortably won their opening match of the Stanford Super Series, but there is room for improvement. The assessment is coming from vice-captain Sylvester Joseph, who led the team in the absence of Chris Gayle.

Stanford Superstars beat Trinidad and Tobago by 22 runs on Saturday in a match where all disciplines of the game could have been better.

“Our running was a bit lackadaisical. We have to work on that. In our bowling, we were not as consistent as we know we can be,” Joseph said.

“We also had a few blunders in the field. Those are areas that we need to work on.”

Batting first, the Stanford Superstars struggled in the early stages before Joseph’s sparkling unbeaten 45 off 31 balls helped them to a competitive total of 146 for five.

They limited Trinidad and Tobago to 124 for eight but there were concerns over a few spilled catches.

“We’ve been preparing for six weeks under these conditions. When you have a packed arena like this tonight, it is something that you need to get accustomed to,” Joseph said.

“It was a trial for us. Hopefully, when we come back on Thursday, we can put up a better performance in the field.

“It’s not easy catching balls out there, but we can’t make any excuses.”

The Stanford Superstars were without key batsmen Chris Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul but Joseph gave the assurance they would be available for the remaining matches.

Skipper Gayle remained on the sidelines because of personal reasons and Chanderpaul was battling a stiff neck.

The Stanford Superstars face Middlesex on Thursday in their final warm-up match before the Stanford 20/20 for 20 game against England on Saturday..
