Jobs and jeers features of May Day celebrations

St. George’s, May 1, 2012 – Grenada’s Acting Labour Minister, Senator Glen Noel, was greeted by a barrage of jeers during workers’ May Day celebrations Tuesday in St. George’s.

At the introduction of Noel, many in the crowd at the National Stadium shouted, “boo,’’ and paid scant attention to his speech which covered several issues, including government’s commitment to supporting the labour movement.

Noel’s speech came one day after he was name as the trigger that forced the resignation of Peter David as Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture.

David, in announcing his resignation on Monday, told reporters that he was “pushed’’ into leaving the government after Prime Minister Tillman Thomas refused to accept a proposal for Noel to retract comments alleging that the former Tourism Minister and others have been involved in a conspiracy to remove the Prime Minister.

David, MP for the Town of St. George, described the allegations, which were captured on video, as “incendiary and unbecoming’’ and “almost bordering on slander.’’

“Leading the Fight for Jobs and Economic Survival” was the theme of the 2012 May Day event that was attended by David, who was the focus of questions and comments from marching workers about his resignation from government.

The resignation, as well issues surrounding division in the ruling National Democratic Congress, and the need for government to invest in job creation, were highlighted on placards carried by workers, including a contingent of Cubans offering various services in Grenada.
