Jobs and housing discussed at meeting

St. George’s, October 28, 2010 – MP Peter David received praise, support and encouragement when he met with a group of his constituents at a town hall meeting on Thursday, October 28.

Many complained about issues such as jobs, housing and crumbling roads in the capital city, but still felt that Hon. David was a hardworking MP and Foreign Affairs Minister, who was doing his best to provide services that people need.

“Where others have failed, you have succeeded,’’ Claudius Monah told Mr. David.

The meeting, at the old Wesley Hall School, brought together residents of the South Zone of St. George, which includes areas such as the Carenage, Herbert Blaize Street, Lucas Street, Archibald Avenue, Tanteen and Lowthers Lane.

MP David opened the meeting by providing an overview of the role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, its achievements in the past two years, and its role as an “agent’’ in initiating discussions that often lead to benefits to Grenada in sectors such as education, agriculture and tourism.

As MP, he said there are two issues with which he is always confronted by constituents – the need for jobs and housing assistance.

Mr. David said the global economic situation is impacting Grenada, but expressed the determination to get through the current crisis.

He is optimistic that joblessness would be eased with the expected start of a number of projects, such as the rehabilitation and upgrading of the Roy St. John Recreation Ground and the St. George’s Market Square, which are both being funded by the Venezuelan government.

“We also need to find resources to help people to repair their homes,’’ he added.

As well, MP David promised to continue efforts at providing more community recreational facilities in River Road and Melville Street, and for smaller projects in Sans Souci and on Herbert Blaize Street.

During a question and answer period, participants highlighted the need for urgent repairs to many streets, including Archibald Avenue, Sans Souci Road and Woolwich Road.

They also made suggestions for improving sports and for Spanish-language preparation for high school students who receive scholarships to study in places such as Cuba, Venezuela and Mexico.

A series of social activities is now being planned by the Town of St. George Constituency Group. They include three children’s Christmas parties, a treat for the elderly, a visit to the Mt. Gay Mental Home, and a St. George’s Community Sports Day next Easter.
