Jamaica Was A Class Apart In Their 4-0 Drubbing Of Grenada In Dcc Finals

Friday, December 5; Jarrett Park, Montego Bay, Jamaica: Jamaica was a class apart in their 4-0 drubbing of Grenada to underline their Alpha status in Group A of the Digicel Caribbean Championships.

Having already secured all three points from their come from behind victory in the opener against Barbados, the Reggae Boyz continued to put the disappointment of World Cup Qualifying behind them with what can only be described as a training exercise against an outgunned Grenada.

Grenada had been giant killers just a few nights before, with a stunning upset victory against tournament favourites Trinidad & Tobago, however, from the offset the Spice Boys were made to look decidedly bland against a Rampant Reggae Boyz.

The opening five minutes of the fixture made Grenada’s diagnosis quite clear, they were showing far too much respect to their hosts and were made to pay after only six minutes when Stoke City’s Demar Phillips charged his way past two defenders on his way into the box before sliding a pass to defender Eric Vernan, who cut onto his left to finish calmly and register his first goal for the National senior team.

Both of Jamaican flanks were working overtime with a steady supply of wide play from the flawless Demar Phillips and Dane Richards. It was Richards that would be the supply line for the second goal when his corner was powered home by an aerially underestimated Luton Shelton to take the lead to 2-0 in minute seventeen, and eventually help himself to the man of the match award.

Rudolph Austin went close in minute 25 when a clearance fell to him 30 yards out, Austin chested before unfurling a volley that forced a spectacular save from the busy Desmond Noel. Andy Williams was next on the shot conveyor belt with a 25 yarder that again tested the goalkeeper. Luton Shelton would round out the first half’s accurate shooting display with another great solo effort: when he cut inside from the left channel wrong footing the defender before rifling right footed at the target.

The second half began with Grenada showing a little bit more Granite at the back, closing the gaps and getting more physical with the Jamaican selection. The time was ripe for a demolitions expert and who better than the “Bomber” Andy Williams, his 25 yard TNT detonated between Noel’s open legs, and rolled past him into the net for Jamaica’s third.

Chances for Grenada were a rarity but Fimbar Williams went as close as you can get when after neat footwork in the box, he managed to squeeze of a shot only to see it cannon off the crossbar.

The fixture was eventually put to bed when Demar Phillips, who had impressed for 90 minutes, latched on to substitute Roland Dean’s good wide work to graduate the score to four and round off the route.

John Barnes’ Jamaica now sit atop the Group A standings with a perfect record while Grenada find themselves demoted to third, as the Digicel Caribbean Championships continues.
