St. George’s, June 2, 2010 – A lecture on the importance of insurance is part of a week of activities of the Association of Grenada Insurance Companies (AGIC). The theme of the week is, “Insurance: It’s Role, Impact and Future in our Society.’’
The lecture, starting 6 pm, at the Annex at the Grenada Trade Centre in Morne Rouge, is Friday, June 4. It will be delivered by St. Lucian Claudius Francis, President of the Insurance Association of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States.
AGIC Vice President, Kenny John, noted that insurance, and having insurance coverage, are a key factor in the running of all societies.
“We believe that the public needs to come and listen to the lecture,’’ Mr. John said. “Mr. Francis, who is also president of the Insurance Council of St. Lucia, will present different ideas based on the theme of the week. It will be an interactive session to which everyone is invited to attend.’’
Mr. John says Insurance Week is an initiative of AGIC President, Molly Roberts, and it’s aimed at bringing insurance agents closer together to share information. Other events of the week will include an awards’ ceremony to recognise the contributions of outstanding insurance agents.
It’s the first organised week of activities of the local insurance industry. AGIC members are also using the occasion to sensitise, educate and inform the public of the importance of insurance.
“Insurance is one of the corner pillars of modern society; it’s one of the corner pillars of commerce,’’ Mr. John said. “All around us insurance is happening, whether we are aware of it or not. Take for example the food we eat that’s imported; that needs to have insurance before it can come to us from its manufacturer. Even the port itself, there is insurance in place.’’
The AGIC Vice President advised those seeking insurance to ask questions and do research. He said insurance is more than coverage for property, such as homes and vehicles.
“When we are taking out insurance,’’ said Mr. John, “there is nothing wrong with asking questions and doing research. It’s important. We have to open our minds and broaden our views about insurance.’’
In addition, “there are many people who have educated their children through insurance,’’ Mr. John said. “Also for wealth creation, a lot of people take out insurance policies so that their loved ones would not be burdened by heavy debts when they have passed on.’’
