Grenadian youth in New York have had their special event to commemorate the 35th anniversary of Grenada’s Independence. It’s the turn of the elderly on February 5.
The Consulate General of Grenada in New York and the 2009 Grenada Independence Anniversary Committee of New York are putting a “Senior Citizens’ Tea Party” on Thursday at Bethany United Methodist Church, 1208 St. John’s Pl., Brooklyn. It’s from three in the after until 5 p.m.
A highlight of the Tea Party will be a live performance from Grenadian author Wendell DeRiggs, who has captured many local idioms, expressions and fables in his writings. They’ll be familiar, and will bring back fond memories, for the Grenadian seniors living in New York.
The Tea Party is the fourth in a series of Independence events being held in New York City.
Last weekend, The Consulate General and the Independence Anniversary Committee hosted a successful Youth Fest and Health Fair, and there was an overwhelming attendance at an Ecumenical Service of Thanksgiving on Sunday. The chief celebrant was Grenada’s Roman Catholic Bishop, His Lordship Vincent Darius.
“All three events so far have been highly successful and we expect the trend to continue on Thursday with the Senior Citizens’ Tea Party,” said Honourable Derrick James, Grenada’s Consul General in New York.
Grenadians who spoke to Government Information Service said they were impressed with the church service and the performance of the popular YouthQuake cultural group.
As someone put it: “One person got so excited with the song, ‘Oh My Grenada,’ that he grabbed the Grenadian flag and started waving it with pride.”
