IMPLEMENTATION FIRST PHASE OF COMMUNITY ACCESS POINTS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED

St. George’s Grenada, 16th November, 2012– The Government of Grenada continues to partner with the civil and business community to make technology available to as many of our people as possible.

The last of 10 Community Access Points was officially launched in la Poterie St. Andrew last Friday.

Prime Minister Tillman Thomas speaking at the event said Internet access is very important and should be equally accessible to all, irrespective of location.

Such projects he said lay the foundation for knowledge and educational advancement. He said his government sees “the need to decentralize education and that is the objective of the program.”

Gail Purcell, Country Manager of FLOW, one of the major sponsors of the initiative, said the company is dedicated to enhancing the capacity of Grenadians to interact in the Global Village.

She said setting up in La Poterie “proved challenging,” but as with all other good things “it was worth it.” She told residents that knowledge in ICT is essential for all, since it is a growing facility that everyone should take advantage of.

Minister for Information and ICT Senator Glen Noel, told residents, “In today’s rapidly changing world, a man’s wealth is measured by his level of knowledge, ability and skills.”

The National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission’s representative at the ceremony, Christa Burke, said ICT is an important pillar of the country’s economy and it results in a more informed society.

She said there is a need to, “increase ICT penetration, as many benefits are derived, within the communities where it has been set up.”

Chairperson of the La Poterie CAPS committee, Bernard Alexander said technology continues to develop daily and so must the human resource.

He gave the sponsors the assurance that the residents would take care of the facility and ensure that it is used for its intended purpose.

The Project was sponsored by FLOW, the World Bank, National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission and the Eastern Caribbean Telecommunication Authority.
