Hundreds of happy, smiling children

Hundreds of happy, smiling children – together with their parents and other adults – converged on Camahogne Park in Grand Anse last Saturday for an event titled, “It’s Christmas: Come Carry and Share.”

The event, which has become an annual feature of the South St. George community, is organized by the National Democratic Congress MP for the area, Honourable Glynis Roberts, with the support of schools, churches and businesses.

“I am very, very happy with the way things have turned out,” Ms. Roberts beamed, when asked Saturday about the event.

The children, in a disciplined and mannerly fashion, lined up to receive gifts of toys, books, food, fruits and juices.  They tapped their tiny feet to the sound of steelband music, and many took to the stage themselves to perform in song and dance.

NDC General Secretary Peter David was there, too, meeting parents and children, enjoying the event and lending solidarity to MP Roberts, his party and parliamentary colleague.

Ms. Roberts, Treasurer of the NDC, was delighted at the number of business people who put their weight behind, “It’s Christmas: Come Carry and Share..”

“Every year, it’s getting bigger and bigger and the support from the business community is overwhelming,” she said. I want to say a hearty thanks to them, especially in this tough economic time, that they still believe in my effort, so that we can bring cheer to those who are less fortunate.”

Ms. Roberts is also the chief organizer of an NDC Christmas event scheduled for Saturday, December 20, 7 pm, at the National Stadium.

The Christmas Thanksgiving Concert will feature local and regional acts.  Among them are Jamaican gospel recording artistes Carlene David, as well as Baron, Skatie and Mucho Tempo parang group of Trinidad and Tobago.  Grenadian performers will include Kamala Steven and Ria Pierre.

Admission to the NDC’s “Christmas Thanksgiving Concert” is $20 in advance and $25 at the door.  Tickets are available at 3Bs Shoe Store, Nicky’s Shoe Store, Gittens’ Drug Mart and Mitchell’s Pharmacy (Grand Anse).  For more information, call 439-5219..
