St. George’s, October 30, 2009 – Speaker of the House of Representatives, George McGuire, has welcomed the receipt of a copy of “White Frock & Coals Dust,’’ a book written by Grenadian journalist Lincoln Toro Depradine.
“What’s written in the book is something that is close to me,’’ the Speaker told Depradine after receiving an autographed complimentary copy of the book following Friday’s sitting of Parliament in St. George’s.
The book explores social life in Grenada, with an emphasis on the Carenage and its surrounding communities. McGuire is a former principal of the Grenada Boys Secondary School and once served as the Member of Parliament for the Town of St. George.
Depradine said he also planned on donating a copy of the book to Opposition Leader Dr. Keith Mitchell. However, Dr. Mitchell was absent from Friday’s sitting of parliament. The book was received on Dr. Mitchell’s behalf by his party colleague Roland Boland, opposition MP for St. Andrew North-East.
“White Frock & Coals Dust’’ has been well-received by readers in Grenada and other countries, including Canada where Depradine lives.
In a comment on the book, Trinidad-born professor of History at York University in Toronto, Dr. David Trotman, said: “This is the kind of social history I enjoy reading and of which much more is needed in the Caribbean.’’
The book was first launched in Grenada in August and copies are available at local stores such as Sea Change, Brathwaite’s Shop, Present Too at Excel Plaza, Heart & Soul at Spiceland Mall, and the bookstore at Maurice Bishop International Airport.
Book launches are planned in the coming months for Carriacou, New Jersey, Washington and Montreal.
