Over 200 hundred athletes from Grenada, the region , USA, UK and Canada gathered at Port Louis Marina on Sunday May 1 for the 2011 Tri de Spice , Grenada’s 24th annual international triathlon and OECS championships.
The Digicel Olympic and Deco Sprint events were the first events of the day. The lead was hotly contested for both the men’s and women’s race in the Olympic distance with the results coming down to the final lap of the run. The Olympic distance race starts with a one mile swim, immediately followed by a 25 mile bike course and then a 6 mile run to the finish line. The men’s race was won by Ancil Greene of Trinidad and the women’s race by Clare Morrall of Grenada. Clare also finished as Grenada’s National Female Olympic Champion and OECS Female Olympic Champion. Danny Donelan who came a close second overall finished as OECS Male Olympic champion and Grenada’s Male National Olympic Champion. The Sprint Distance race, which covers half the distance, was won by Inga Karasek of Canada and Akil Baptiste of Trinidad. Aislinn Noel secured the OECS Female Sprint Champion and Grenada National Champion for the women with Troy Felix winning the Grenada National Male Champion title and Andre Simon of Antigua winning the OECS Male Champion title.
The junior races ran in the afternoon with 5 junior categories, 6 & under, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 13-15 plus the Try a Tri race for over 16’s. The winners of the boys’ categories were River Newman, Simon Eligon of Trinidad, Kerry Ollivierre, Allen Mohammed of Trinidad and Jamal Regis. The winners of the girls’ categories were Faith Newman, Enya Noel, Gabrielle Paparo, Chelsea Mohammed of Trinidad and Naomi Brathwaite. As part of the Junior races, 125 students from 11 schools participated in the Republic Bank Right Start Inter-school triathlon championships. Westmorland once again won the Interschool trophy after a closely contested event .
The Volkswagen 5 K run was won by Bernard Joseph and Shermica Lewis.
Congratulations to the Grenada national team who will be heading to Tobago on May 28th for the Rainbow Cup international triathlon and then to St Lucia in September for the BMW ST. Lucia International triathlon.
The Grenada International triathlon has been selected to host the Caribbean Championships in 2012 to celebrate their 25th anniversary.
