Grenadians reminded of keeping safe, clean environment

St. George’s, June 26, 2011 (GIS) – Labour Minister Glynis Roberts has commended Cooling Tech Limited (CTL) for being “a pioneer and a friend of the environment,’’ and has reminded all Grenadians of the need to preserve a safe and clean environment.

“Our Government is strongly committed to a safe and clean environment, and has been a world leader on environmental issues as chair of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS). We implore everyone – individuals and businesses – to make every effort to reduce the pressure and stress on the environment in whatever they do,’’ Hon. Roberts said  in delivering the keynote speech at a CTL event on Dusty Highway in South St. George’s. She is the MP for the area.

For the past 15 years, CTL has been the distributor in Grenada for Carrier, a world leader in the invention of air-conditioning units.

The Dusty Highway event was to celebrate the formal opening of CTL’s new corporate headquarters and equipment shop.

Mrs. Roberts congratulated the management and staff of CTL on their achievement, noting also the “innovative’’ attempts of Cooling Tech to “both conserve energy and assist Grenadians to save on their energy expenses.’’

She referenced a CTL promotion called “Green Choice.’’ The promotion started with an incentive for consumers, who purchased Cooling Tech’s Green Choice Supplement System before May 1, 2011, to receive a free energy audit of their premises, along with free installation.

CTL officials said the promotion was in keeping with a company decision to join the international attempt to eliminate refrigerant gases that pollute the environment.  One of the major gases is refrigerant R22.

“It is heartening to know that, despite the financial cost to the company, CTL has refused to use any equipment that has R22 gas and to destroy those with R22 gas in its possession,’’ Minister Roberts said.

“For the initial promotion program, CTL budgeted $75,000 and donated its first energy-efficient and high-wall inverted unit to the Disease Control Unit at General Hospital.  On behalf of the Minister and Ministry of Health, Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas and other members of Government, I want to thank you for that.’’

Mrs. Roberts, who is also Minister of Ecclesiastical Affairs and Social Security, said all Grenadians have a role to play in environment preservation.

“At the individual level,’’ she said, “Grenadians can do simple things like discontinue the practice of littering our rivers, drains, beaches and mangroves with plastic, plastic bags and other debris. Please, keep our environment clean. At the corporate level, other companies can embark on their own environmentally friendly initiatives as Cooling Tech has done.’’

CTL must be applauded for “taking the lead in helping us replace those old inefficient air-conditioned units that are costing a lot of money to run and have been polluting the environment,’’ Mrs. Roberts said.
