St. George’s February 20, 2009, (GIS)…. A Grenada students’ organization that once existed in New York City could soon be revived.
The reconstitution of an organization to represent Grenadians studying in New York was one of the topics discussed at a recent meeting involving students and diplomats, Derrick James and Michael Mitchell.
Mr. James is Grenada’s Consul General in New York and Mr. Mitchell is the Minister Counselor at Grenada’s New York Mission.
Both men were appointed to their diplomatic positions by the government of Prime Minister Tillman Thomas, who assumed office following his party’s general election victory last July.
The diplomats were told that the inability to find a suitable meeting place was one of the reasons for the demise of the former students’ organization..
Mr. James said he was committed to finding a solution to the problem and to making the students lives as easy as possible for them.
He believes that once the students’ group is reorganized, it will pave the way for a smoother transition and a better study environment in New York for Grenadians who will be going there to attend school.
The meeting also agreed to the possibility of setting up a book exchange depositary, where used books will be donated to new students.
Mr. Mitchell said young Grenadians studying abroad are part of an important resource pool and are a significant asset in Grenada’s continued attempts to expand and develop its economic opportunities.
