Horace Highland Williams began his journey on November 24, 1932. He grew up in the small village of Victoria, which is located in Saint Mark’s, Grenada. He was born to Vivetta and L.G Williams along with two other siblings, Locksley and Claudine. At an early age he attended The Saint John Anglican School in Gouyave, St.John’s, where he displayed leadership qualities, a trend that lasted to the end.
In his quest for self-improvement, he moved to the city where he partnered with his elder brother, Locksley, at the firm of O.D. Brisbane & Sons LTD. He later led the sales department. He then left O.D. Brisbane, married Una Commissiong and raised three children. Horace teamed up again with his brother Locksley as the assistant manager of the Star Agency Limited.
Horace loved sports, his favorite being cricket, then later tennis. He was a prolific batsman and off-spin bowler. He proudly represented Grenada and the Windward Islands on numerous occasions.
In the early 1980’s Horace immigrated to the United States. It was here that he and his son Roger built what is now known as Star Caribbean Inc. Their relentless and determined efforts pushed Star Caribbean from its humble beginnings in the trunk of a car to become the number one shipping service in Brooklyn. Horace was the leading light for all who worked with him. His competitors respected him and followed his leadership. Star Caribbean was not just a business to Horace, but also meant to positively touch the lives of his employees.
Horace was a community activist and was very much involved in humanitarian efforts. He donated handsomely to the NYPD, USPTA, and to all organizations that required his help. He also contributed to young aspiring cricketers from Grenada. He was honored by G.B.S.S Alumni for his exuberant service to the community. He was well liked in the neighborhood where he operated his business.
Horace was well kept, and had a fondness for beauty and neatness. He had very high expectations for himself and others. Horace, although small in stature, was a giant in thoughts and in deeds.
At home he would retreat from his business demeanor to a relaxed charismatic family oriented individual, Scotch in hand and soft music in the background. Horace had a profound effect on all those he met, making it difficult for them not to be touched by his care and concern. We will miss Horace, but we are thankful for his life and the time spent with us. We are comforted in remembering that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
Horace ended his journey May 16th, 2011. He led a respectable life for 78 years. Left to mourn are his wife Yolanda Williams; his sons, Harold, Roger, Ray, Ryan, and Cory; his daughters Gayle, Carol and Valerie; his brothers, Locksley, Linden, Littleton, Leary, and Lenroy; his nieces and nephews, Roxanne, Phillip, Leslie, Locksley Jr., John, and Viola; and grandchildren; as well as numerous close friends and relatives.
