St. George’s, November 8, 2011 – For yet another year, Grenada has captured the team swim title among countries of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). Only this time, the Spice Isle will have to share bragging rights with St. Lucia.
In a historic climax to the 21st Sagicor OECS Swimming Championships in St. Lucia, Grenada was declared joint winner with the St. Lucia National Team. At the end of three days of competition, both countries were tied on 1,484 points.
Antigua and Barbuda amassed 1,139 points; St. Vincent and the Grenadines finished with 261; and the British Virgin Islands had 217.
Grenada completed the competition with the most gold medals – 55. St. Lucia won 42 gold.
However, in the overall medal count, St. Lucia – with 52 bronze – finished with a total medal count of 133.
Grenada, with 31 bronze and 37 silver, had a total of 123 medals.
It was a truly team effort from Grenada that allowed the country to retain its OECS swim team title. Contributions to the team’s victory were made among male and female swimmers eight years and younger, including Idania Hopkin, Breann Alexander, Meeka Ollivierre, Ifeoma Cherebin, Kris Regis and Nicholas John.
Other outstanding performances were turned in by swimmers such as Katie Lillie; Marco Bagnasco; Delron Felix; Gabrielle Paparo; Simone LaQua; Justin Steele; Kerry Ollivierre; Oreoluwa Cherebin; Kendra Moore; Valorie Andrews; Corey Ollivierre; Calum Noel; Shawn Gabriel; Patrick Postl; Ayesha Noel; Kevlian Andrews; Andrew Hopkin; Kahlil John; Inga Karasek; Claire Moralle; Martin Renwick; Chris Regis; and Esau Simpson.
