Grenada selects Carifta team

St. George’s, March 15, 2013 – The Grenada Athletics Association has selected a 12-member team to compete in the Junior Carifta Games in the Bahamas, Caribupdate Weekly has reported.

“The proposed squad includes defending Carifta champion in the boys’ under-17 javelin event, Anderson Peters,’’ the paper said in its March 13 edition.

“A student of the St David’s Catholic Secondary School (SDCSS), Peters is also Grenada’s 2012 Junior Athlete of the Year. Mickel Joseph, a Hillsborough Secondary School student who has also medaled at Carifta, is also competing in the boys’ under-17 javelin.’’

The six boys and six girls are drawn from eight of the island’s secondary schools.

Of the 12, only three – including Peters and Joseph – are participating in field events.

The third is female under-17 javelin thrower, Candesha Scott, of SDCSS.

The remainder of the Grenada team comprises Samuel Alexander; David Antoine; Albert Joseph; Ronnie Ollivierre; Kimonee Patterson; Chelsea Mitchell; Olive Charles; Melani Rodney; and Princess Whiteman.

The Carifta track and field championships will be held March 29 – April 1.
