The third annual OECS Triathlon was held on the island of Nevis on March 17th. The Grenada Triathlon Association had two athletes racing in the Olympic Distance race. In addition to hosting the OECS race, a sprint distance race and a try a tri event, an ITU Pan American Cup race was also run. The Pan American Cup race attracted Elite triathletes from Japan, Spain, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and the USA. Elite athletes battled for points and Beijing Olympic places. The OECS/ Age Group race took place on Sunday afternoon. The swim was in a calm bay close to the Nevis capital of Charlestown, the ride and run routes were along the windy coast road. Marc DeCaul faced stiff completion from athletes from Martinique, the USA as well as from Nevis. Clare Morrall raced athletes from Holland, the USA, Barbados and Nevis. Marc placed second in his age group. Pressure was felt by Clare even prior to the race as her defending champion status was widely acknowledged! Clare raced hard and was successful in bringing the OECS trophy back to Grenada for the second year in a row. Clare crossed the finish line with her seemingly lucky Grenada flag held high above her head! The Caribbean Triathlon race series continued this past weekend in Barbados with their national championships. Marc DeCaul represented Grenada again and placed first in his age group, fifth overall in a strong field of athletes from Martinique, Barbados and the UK.
The 21st Annual Grenada Triathlon will take place on May 3rd and 4th. The race base will be Lance Aux Epines Cottages. The Grenada Triathlon Association is actively seeking sponsorship for the annual race, for an ongoing race series, for the association’s active competitors and for the association for development of the sport of triathlon throughout Grenada.
