Grenada Healthcare in Crisis

During my visit recent trip to Grenada, I visited a friend who later died at the General Hospital in St. George’s.  From the few visits I made to the hospital I can tell that our healthcare system is in a deplorable state.

The hospital lacks basic items like gloves, napkins, pain killers and much more.  Patients needing medication will have to call their relatives to go to the Pharmacy to purchase the medication and drop it off at the hospital.

Patients requiring any procedure done will have to pay prior to the procedure.  Emergency care is just as bad. Persons involved in accidents goes through hell to have anything done.

I was thinking about retiring to Grenada in a few years, but now I am having doubts. Why should someone who is getting older return to Grenada to live when there is no adequate healthcare?

Moving around the country I saw some unoccupied houses and was told that the owners got sick and had to return to the USA or the UK. Now, why should an aging person build their dream house in Grenada when they cannot get basic medical care?

Some people with relatives abroad are able to travel to obtain treatment; the politicians travel to other countries to get treatment for any health problem; the majority of Grenadians cannot afford such. The government needs to act quickly to correct this situation.  Grenadians deserve better.
