Grenada Coalition Of Service Launches Its Second Annual Service Expo

In a simple, yet impressive, ceremony at the Grenada Trade Center , the umbrella organization for the development of services, on Thursday morning, announced  its plans for its second annual National Services Expo, under the theme “Services – the future is now”, witnessed by stakeholders as well as members of the local media.

Addressing the media launch, Chairman – Jude Bernard – highlighted the fact that service related activities account for over 80% of Grenada’s GDP  and the fact that while Grenada has been recording massive deficits in its trade in goods (hundreds or millions), it enjoys significant surplus in its trade in services (estimated at almost $200, 000, 000 per year).

He therefore emphasized the urgent need for Grenada to explore all opportunities for increasing its production and export of services as this can have a significant positive impact on employment creation, export earnings, reduction the country’s trade deficit, creating employment and self-employment opportunities thus playing a pivotal role in future economic development Grenada.

One of the highlights of today’s launch was the signing of MOU between GCSI and Caribbean Coding Academy (CCA), a Grenada-based, regional group focussing of training young people to write computer programs/codes international business clients.

Other spokespersons were: Mr. Clifford Browne, representing Caribbean Coding Academy, Mr. Lenworth Gordon of the Grenada Airport Authority, Mr. Dawson Lewis of FLOW and Ms. Shaunica Peters, representing Digicel.

The 2-day Expo, which opens in exactly 4 weeks from today (June 21 & 22) at the Grenada Trade Centre, Morne Rouge, will see participation from most areas of Grenada’s broad services sector which includes:

  • Recreational, Cultural & Entertainment Services
  • Tourism & Hospitality
  • Educational Services
  • Fashion, Fashion Designs and Apparel
  • Health & Wellness
  • ICT & Related Services

Objectives

The main Objectives of the Services Expo are:

  1. To highlight the importance of Services to the Grenada’s economy
  2. To create awareness of the wide range of services currently produced locally
  3. To create awareness of the potential that services offer for employment, self-employment, import substitution, export generation and economic development
  4. To heighten interest of the population, especially the young, in becoming involved in services as a business and career
  5. To highlight to policy-makers and financial institutions the need to give greater support to services-related fields and endeavours
