GRENADA AND OAS DISCUSS MAJOR REGIONAL DEVELOPMENTS

ST.GEORGE’S, GRENADA, FEBRUARY 26th, 2011_The situation in Haiti dominated discussions between Grenada’s Prime Minister, Hon. Tillman Thomas and Secretary General of the Organisation of American States (OAS), His Excellency Jose Miguel Insulza, this morning at the Spice Island Beach Resort.

“I think some progress is being made in Haiti. We are looking forward to the election cycle running its course, and we hope that it will,” the OAS Secretary General told Prime Minister Thomas, who was only minutes away from opening the first session of the second day, of the 22nd Inter-sessional meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community, at the Grenada Grand Beach Resort in Grand Anse.

Haiti’s President Rene Preval is heading a delegation to the CARICOM meeting in St. George’s to participate in discussions on the future of his country. Haiti is one of the major topics on the agenda.

The Prime Minister also sought the assistance of the OAS with constitutional reform as Grenada prepares for full entrance into the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), which requires a referendum that will allow for Grenada’s membership of the Court.

The Grenada Prime Minister and the OAS Secretary General exchanged views on a number of other hemispheric issues, including developments in Honduras and the visit to the CARICOM meeting of two candidates vying for the position of Secretary General of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO).

The candidates of both Brazil and Spain are in St. George’s seeking the support of CARICOM leaders for their candidate to fill the FAO position.
