St. George’s, April 12, 2011 (GIS) – Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Hon. Tillman Thomas, is visiting St. John and St. Mark which have been affected by persistent overnight showers.
Prior to the arrival of the Prime Minister, teams from the Ministry of Works, including Minister Joseph Gilbert, had begun clearing debris from the streets.
Gouyave resident and GIS staffer, Twana Sam, has reported that as many as 11 boats have sunk sink in Victoria, St. Mark. Early reports also say that there are five major landslips in Gouyave, with about three houses lost along the river and other properties flooded. However, there are no reports of lost of lives.
In addition to Prime Minister Thomas, the affected areas are also being visited by other government ministers, MP for St. John Michael Church, and representatives of the National Disaster Management Agency.
The situation has forced the Ministry of Sports to postpone tonight’s lighting of the Alston George Park in Victoria.
Reports are that the rains have affected other parts of the island, including South West and North West St. Andrew, resulting in rising water levels in some rivers and landslides in the Grand Etang area.
Areas in Carriacou are also said to have been affected by the showers.
