First General Manager of Grenada Ports Authority – George Sydney (Fritz) Coard – passed on to the great beyond Saturday morning August 16, 2008 at Aventura Hospital in North Miami, U.S.A. after a short illness.
Mr. Coard had a distinguished career within the Grenadian Public Service which he joined upon leaving the Grenada Boys’ Secondary School (GBSS). His first place of work was at the Customs & Excise Department where he remained consistent enough to assume the positions of Harbour Master – Comptroller of Customs. He acted as Permanent Secretary in the Ministries of Works and Social Affairs – working along with then Ministers Herbert Preudhomme and Lady Cynthia Gairy.
When the People’s Revolutionary Government thought of realizing their vision to establish the Grenada Ports Authority – Mr. Fritz Coard was invited by the then Minister of Finance – Bernard Coard to head that statutory body – a job he held until his retirement almost 15 years ago..
Mr. Coard leaves to mourn his wife Theda; six children – Peter, Richard, Paul, Suzanne, Sonia, Jennifer; twelve grand children – Bryan, Donna, Michael, Christine, Jonathan, George, Nicholas, Danielle, Jaylen, Trevor, Shane and Gabrielle; three daughters-in-law – Deby, Kim, and Ingrid; One Son-in-law – Heath; sisters, Joan James and Pat Regis in Grenada, Bernadette (Bunny) Pierre in Jamaica, Denise Thomas in the US; several nephews and neices including Cheryl Fletcher and close family friend – Eddie Frederick in Miami.
Funeral arrangements will be announced in a subsequent release.
