Gayle says sorry for early exit

West Indies batsman Chris Gayle has apologised for his side’s limp departure from the World Cup but also defended himself from criticism by coach Ottis Gibson.

Pakistan romped to a 10-wicket victory over West Indies, who were bowled out for 112 after opting to bat first in Wednesday’s quarter-final.

Gibson, the former Test seamer and England bowling coach who took charge of West Indies in January 2010, admitted afterwards he was disappointed by the contribution of senior players, including former captain Gayle, during the tournament.

Gayle used his Twitter feed on Thursday to issue and apology to fans and then added: “it is easy to blame the senior players, but difficult to accept the truth!!! Curse me blame me!!!!”

Change

Gibson has promised the team management will takes some “serious decisions” before the home series against Pakistan in April.

“West Indies cricket for the last 10 years has been pretty much the same. And also they’ve been the same players,” he said, referring to Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan.

“This tournament has seen the emergence of a quite a few good young players and those young players are the players we will build our future on.”
