GAYLE LAMENTS BAD PERFORMANCE

Sunday 24th May 2009. Captain of the Digicel-sponsored West Indies team, Chris Gayle, described his team’s disappointing defeat to England in the second one-day international at Bristol as “a bad day at the office” and urged his players to improve in the crucial final match in Birmingham on Tuesday. The tourists can still square the three-match series, which began with a washout at Leeds before Sunday’s six-wicket loss at Bristol.

“Yes, it was a bad day at the office but we have a final to play on Tuesday,” Gayle said. “We’ll try and put this behind us. I don’t know how to describe it but it’s really, really bad from our part.”

Gayle admitted the blame must fall on the batting again. Only four players got into double figures as the West Indies team was bowled out for 160 in 38.3 overs. That display followed disappointing totals of 156, 256, 310 and 176 in the two Tests which preceded this one-day series.

“We’ve been stressing on getting runs on the board and it seems to be continuing in the same vein,” Gayle said. “We just have to try and find a different formula in the next game and see what happens. We can’t continue like this. Someone has to actually try and step up.”

Gayle is still looking forward with optimism to Tuesday’s final match of the tour. “It’s a final for us. We just have to try and square the series,” he said. “All is not lost as yet. It’s a must, there’s no two ways about it.”
