Former soldier claims Cuban troops were sent to protect PM Bishop

by Michael Bascombe

ST GEORGE’S, October 19, 2012 – A former Grenadian soldier has claimed that Cuba signed a secret deal to send Cuban commandos to protect then Prime Minister Maurice Bishop, who was eventually assassinated.

The claim was made by Kennedy Budhall, a former Lieutenant in the People’s Revolutionary Army (PRA). Mr Budhall, in an interview on REAL FM Radio on Friday, said that about 60 Cuban troops who had returned from the Angolan war were dispatched to Grenada and stationed at the airstrip which was being constructed at Point Salines.

He said that the orders to use the troops were never issued because of the disruption of communication between Grenada and Cuba.

Budhall, who was among a number of nationals detained during the 1979-83 Revolution, was speaking on the day Grenadians are observing the 29th anniversary of the military coup which toppled the Grenada Revolution.
