Football competition scheduled to open at Old Trafford

St. George’s, March 22, 2012 – Old Trafford Playing Field is about to host its first major organized competition since last year’s upgrading and rehabilitation of the facility at Tanteen, St. George’s.

A tournament, for teams of players 40 years and older, is scheduled to open at Old Trafford this Sunday afternoon, March 25.

The theme of the tournament is: “Rekindling Friendship; Celebrating Community Football Heroes’’.

Organizers say that among the objectives of the competition are the reestablishing strong bonds of friendship and the showcasing of the skills of retired soccer players.

In a warm-up to the tournament, veteran players of the Carenage will engage in a friendly match with a squad of younger players drawn from the community. The friendly is carded for 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 24.

Since the beginning of the year, Old Trafford has become a hive of daily activities of schools, sports clubs, community organizations and church groups.

Among the regular users are the T.A. Marryshow Community College, Anglican High School, Carenage Sports Club and athletes of the Royal Grenada Police Force.

It will be the venue on Easter Monday, April 9, for a children’s fun day organized by the St. George’s Anglican Church.
