FILM FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS WORK OF SGU MED STUDENTS

In May 2009, St. George’s University School of Medicine students Philip and Lucy Magcalas were invited to bring their 35 minute film, Skin and Bone, to the Rainier Independent Film Festival located in the lush foothills of Mt. Rainier in Washington State.  The third term students took advantage of their summer break to present the World Festival Premiere of their short ensemble medical drama at the event.

The film Skin and Bone focuses on the variety of people – not just doctors and patients, but nurses, technicians, and family members – whose lives all intertwine over the course of one day in a hospital cardiac catheterization lab.  Through this project, the filmmakers/students aimed to highlight various aspects of medicine, such as interpersonal relationships, moral character in medicine, and equity in healthcare, as well as the manner in which medicine is portrayed in popular media.

Skin and Bone was very well received by audience members and filmmakers at the festival, and managed to strike a chord with healthcare workers and laypeople alike.  The film was written and directed by Philip M. Magcalas and produced by his wife and academic colleague Lucy Magcalas.  It is the second short film made by their Boston-based company, Milk and Cookie Productions, which finished filming and initial post-production before the students matriculated.  The current edit was completed in January 2009 during their break between 1st and 2nd terms, and the final cut is expected to be released on dvd in 2010.
