A call has been made for Grenadians to be more aware of their historical and cultural heritage during this year’s Emancipation celebrations.The call was made as plans continue for the staging of activities at the national level.
A public lecture at Marryshow House on Tuesday July 29th will start this year’s Emancipation day activities.
The lecture begins at 5:00 pm.
Emancipation activities which are held during Grenada’s carnival celebrations every year include a bonfire and bush tea night and a flambeau march.
August 1st has been officially declared Emancipation day in Grenada, although the celebration is not new.
On that day; Grenadians are encouraged to show off their African wear as a show of their appreciation for the African culture.
There will also be the reading of the emancipation proclamation at the market square at noon.
This year, focus will be placed on preserving the Grenadian heritage and culture; while seeking to evoke a better understanding of the significance of emancipation day.
Minister of state in the ministry of youth, sports and culture Sen. Arli Gill says much emphasis will be placed on keeping culture alive.Emancipation day comes after the 1833 slave abolition act ended slavery in the British Empire on August 1st 1834. Activities will be held under the theme: ‘Remembering our ancestors, preserving our freedom.’
