St. George’s, January 13, 2010 – Grenada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Peter David says he, too, is saddened by the loss of life, injury and infrastructural damaged that Haiti has suffered.
The Foreign Minister, like Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas, has expressed deep sympathy to Haitians, whose capital city was rocked by a 7.0 earthquake on Tuesday.
“This is very tragic and appears to be a major disaster,’’ Mr. David said. “We, who suffered so much from Hurricane Ivan in 2004, can only imagine what the people of Haiti are suffering.’’
Elisabeth Debrosse Delatour, the wife of the Haitian President, says most of Port-au-Prince, the capital, is destroyed, with toppled buildings and an untold number of people trapped and injured.
A precise casualty figure has not been given, but one U.S. official says the State Department has been told to expect serious loss of life.
Minister David, who is also MP for the Town of St. George, called on Grenadians from all sectors of society to mount a national effort to assist the Haitian people.
He says that in the Town of St. George, a community meeting on the Haitian situation will be held on Thursday, January 14, at 5 PM, at the old Wesley Hall School on Lucas Street.
