George’s, November 14, 2009 – Government Senator Pemba Braveboy, president of the Democratic Youth Organisation (DYO), has said that she makes no apology for leading an organisation which is engaged in issues such as fighting for the rights of youth and women.
Ms. Braveboy, a medical doctor by profession, clashed with Opposition Senator Devon Rachae during a recent sitting of the Senate.
The DYO is the youth arm of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Dr. Braveboy is president of the youth group.
Senator Rachae, who was the defeated NNP candidate for St. David in the 2008 general election, suggested that the DYO was moving to replace the National Youth Council (NYC).
“From my understanding, the DYO is a politically affiliated organisation and there is no way that organisation can be seen, or work with, as the National Youth Council,’’ Mr. Rachae said.
Senator Braveboy, in her response, dismissed the idea that the DYO is replacing the NYC.
“I categorically state that I am not aware, as DYO president, that we are supposed to be placing the National Youth Council. I will not support a move like that,’’ Senator Braveboy said.
She described the DYO as a “politically affiliated group’’ which is working in the interest of women and children across Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
“We are the youth arm of the NDC and we are doing things in this nation,’’ Senator Braveboy said. “We advocate for the rights of young people; we advocate for women’s equality; and we advocate for the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger. If people have a problem with that, or they would like to join us, we are open.’’
The DYO president said the NDC’s youth group is open to all young people.
“You can apply to become a member of the NDC and, thereby, become a member of the youth arm of the party,’’ Senator Braveboy said.
“We work together with the NGO community, the churches, the private sector and the general public in putting on various activities to commemorate the International Day to Stand Up Against Poverty.’’
