PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD, April 4, 2011 – On Saturday, April 2, the University of the West Indies Alumni Association of the St. Augustine campus held an awards ceremony as part of the campus’ 50th Anniversary celebrations. This Gala event celebrated the successes of those adjudicated to be among the top graduates of the St. Augustine campus.
Grenadian born and 1997 graduate, Dr. Nicole Phillip was named one of UWI’s 50 Distinguished Alumni. Dr. Phillip, who is the Dean of the School of Arts, Sciences and Professional Studies at the T.A. Marryshow Community College, was one of only five non- Trinidadian graduates to be so honoured. The magnitude of her accomplishment can be further underscored by the fact that she was one of only three graduates within the last twenty (20) years to be recognized by the Selection Committee, which was made up of Alumni, University Administrators, representatives from all Faculties and corporate citizens.
An emotional Dr. Phillip, upon receiving the award, reflected upon the inspirational role that her family has played in her life and says that this recognition will strengthen her resolve to contributing to the academic, social and cultural upliftment of Caribbean young people, particularly our girls.
Principal of the St. Augustine Campus, Professor Clement Sankat in congratulating the awardees, described them as fitting the mold of the ideal UWI graduate: a critical, creative, innovative, informed and knowledgeable thinker and problem solver who communicates effectively, is a leader and team player, is socially and culturally responsive, operates ethically with a regional frame of reference and is motivated to be a life-long learner.
Dr. Phillip’s consultancies on cultural and heritage projects, including the European Union Fort Restoration Project (2004) and the Museum at Spice Basket, her public lectures commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the Abolition of the British Slave Trade and the Emancipation Lecture Series, her volunteerism and her academic contributions, the pinnacle to date being her 2010 publication, Women in Grenadian History 1783 – 1983 most definitely epitomizes the ideals envisioned by UWI’s hierarchy.
What is even more impressive is that these milestones have been accomplished in less than ten (10) years after being awarded her doctorate in History from UWI. This Grenadian Lecturer, Author and Consultant is currently working on two major projects, another book, which will chronicle the 1979 Grenada revolution and an article designed to capture the contributions and experiences of Grenada’s female Parliamentarians.
