A group of Dominican musicians, singers, and writers, led by prominent song writer Pat Aaron, and featuring reigning and Calypso King, Denison Dice’ Joseph and Road March King, Mighty Obee, are promising a show that “will change your life forever” this weekend.
The show, billed for Saturday from 7.00pm at the Harlem Plaza, is being held under the theme, “The Dominican Artists, Concert for Change” and will feature local talent with an international flavour.
Seven-time calypso Monarch, Dice, will perform songs he selected.
Dice won his 2013 crown with a popular song entitled “Time for Change” , which according to reliable reports, he was not allowed to sing during his performance at the recent World Creole Music Festival, in spite of the fact that the lyrics are uplifting, inspiring and in keeping with calypsos tradition of educational commentary on the local social and political environment.
Also slated to perform are Bouyon pioneers WCK, the Lucas band from the Valley, Q95 song contest winner, Leona, with her Baby Machine; the Wave with his, I must Speak; Daddy Miller; Anwar Cadette who will perform Free Joseph, The Bob, Mighty Acres, Soul Pouse, Nellie Elizee and special appearances from Ronald Charles, the UWP candidate for the Roseau Valley and UWP Political leader Lennox Linton.
According to prominent song writer and show promoter Pat Aaron, “In its Jobs Forum presented to Dominica on 30th October, 2013, UWP Team Dominica, held up the music and cultural industries, as a major pillar in its plan to create 5000 permanent jobs, within its first three years of government. The UWP created the WCMF, some 18 years ago. The present Labour administration has been in Office for 15 years, and the WCMF and the music industry in Dominica, have remained stagnant. The majority of musicians and other artists, are just scraping a living. And as I wrote and King Dice sings, ‘When government counter productive to what its citizens are trying to achieve, When is one set alone enjoying, And the majority just scraping up a living, It’s nothing strange, IT’S TIME FOR CHANGE’.
The staging of this concert by the Dominica Artists for Change, aims to highlight Dominican music, as well as it sends a strong message that musicians, singers, song writers, and other Dominican Artists want a change of government. As Gordon Henderson said, musicians and other artists want a government that will give artists, music and other cultural Industries a chance.”
