Saturday, February 28 – Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados: 50 young Barbadian school cricketers were the envy of their peers at Kensington Oval on Thursday when mobile telecommunications company, Digicel, treated them to the first day of the 4th Digicel Test match of the Digicel Series 2009 between West Indies and England.
The group, ranging in ages from nine to sixteen, comprised students from Combermere School, Queen’s College, West Terrace Primary School, Wesley Hall Junior and the Phoenix Academy.
Alex Tasker, Digicel Barbados’ Head of Sales and Marketing, explained that the event, themed ‘Kids at Cricket’, has become a signature of the Digicel Series and provides children from various schools across the island with the opportunity to attend and be a part of the excitement of an international cricket match.
“The participants are usually members of the cricket teams of their schools and we aim to provide them with an experience that we hope will boost their interest in the game and, in turn, encourage them to aspire to greatness and someday represent the West Indies.
“Digicel remains committed to providing opportunities and initiatives such as this that assist in the development of the game. The children are the future and we are confident that the more we can expose them to the highest level of performance at an early age, the greater the benefits will be in the future.”
The Digicel Series Kids at Cricket programme will continue throughout the host islands as a part of Digicel’s promise to develop the game of Cricket across the region.
