Bridgetown, Barbados, March 24 – Windward Islands, with a first innings lead of 120, were 252 for two off 70 overs in their second innings – an overall lead of 372 – at the close of play on the second day of the fifth round WICB first-class match against Barbados at Kensington Oval here today.
The not out batsmen were Devon Smith on 121 and Andre Fletcher, seven.
Left-hander Smith has been at the crease for 276 minutes, having faced 223 balls and struck 18 boundaries. He reached his third century of the tournament this season in 214 minutes off 184 balls with 16 fours and has now lifted his aggregate to 619.
Tyrone Theophile, looking to play square on the off side, edged fast bowler Jason Holder to wicket-keeper Shane Dowrich after scoring a career-best 91 (170-1; 46.2 overs) and Johnson Charles, sweeping, was caught by Dowrich off off-spinner Ashley Nurse for 23 (229-2; 61.5 overs).
Theophile batted for 174 minutes, faced 141 balls and struck 11 fours and two sixes.
Barbados, starting the day on 33 for five, were bowled out for 64 off 33.3 overs in reply to the Windward Islands first innings total of 184 all out off 77.1 overs – 45 minutes before lunch.
Kevin Stoute, with 33, was the only batsman to reach double-figures from his overnight 16. He batted for 83 minutes, faced 77 balls and struck four boundaries.
Off-spinner Shane Shillingford was the leading wicket-taker with four for 20 off 12.3 overs. Fast bowler Nelon Pascal took three for 29 off 12 overs and left-arm seamer Kenroy Peters, two for nine off seven overs.
Today, Dowrich, playing a loose on-drive, was caught at slip by Smith off Shillingford for three (49-6; 21.2 overs); Stoute, who resumed on 16, was caught at forward short-leg by Charles as he fended at one which bounced from Shillingford (60-7; 29.4 overs); Nurse, pushing forward to a doosra, was leg before wicket for nought (60-8; 29.5 overs); Holder was comprehensively bowled off stump by Peters for six (64-9; 32.5 overs) and Sulieman Benn, swinging, was caught at leg-gully by wicket-keeper Lindon James off Shillingford for two (64 all out), leaving Miguel Cummins not out on nought.
Last evening, Rashidi Boucher, playing to the onside, was leg before wicket by Pascal without scoring (4-1; 2.3 overs); captain Kirk Edwards, driving, was caught overhead by Garey Mathurin running from mid-on off Pascal for one (7-2; 5 overs); 19-year-old debutant Shai Hope, hooking, was caught by James off Peters for nought (8-3; 5.5 overs); Jonathan Carter, driving, was caught at mid-off by Mathurin off Pascal for five (14-4; 8.1 overs) and Kraigg Brathwaite was run out for 16 in a bad mix-up with Stoute after hitting Mathurin to cover where Lesporis’ throw to the bowler’s end found both batsmen at the striker’s end (33-5; 16.3 overs).
