Christmas health fair for children

St. George’s, December 11, 2011 – When members of the Organisation for Community Enrichment (OCE) sat down to plan a Christmas treat for children, they wanted to do something different to the regular seasonal giving. As such, they decided on hosting a health fair for children.

“Christmas is not only about toys for children. We also want to make sure that as part of the Christmas celebrations, children are healthy,’’ said OCE member Dianne Gibbs.

The health fair, the first of its kind by OCE, was held December 10 at Wesley College in Queen’s Park, St. George’s.

With volunteer support from doctors, nurses and other health professionals, children from as young as one month old received free general medical check-ups, consultation on language skills and speech therapy, and coupons allowing for discounts on eye examinations.

In addition, parents were given packages of food for their children. Each contained items such as milk, cereal, juices and Milo.

“The health fair has been a success,’’ said volunteer Kim Francis, another OCE member. “People turned out in their numbers this morning.’’

Francis said the Organisation for Community Enrichment would like to make the health fair an annual event.

“We are pleased with this first health fair. As long as the sponsors are there, we will do it annually,’’ Francis said.

“For this first health fair,’’ she added, “we must say thanks to the doctors, nurses and other health professionals who assisted, as well as to the MP for the Town of St. George, Mr. Peter David, for donating to the supply of food. Thanks also to our other sponsors: Gittens Pharmacy; Bryden and Minors; Independence Agencies; Sunshine Promotion; Glenelg  Spring Water; Grenadian Optical; Kool System; and Coca Cola of the Grenada Bottling Company.’’
