Christmas: A Welcomed Respite

Caribupdate Weekly, Editorial

December 18, 2014

Christmas is just days away and we all should welcome the respite of the holiday; embrace it as an opportunity to turn down the temperature and ease up on grating on the national psyche.

Lord knows we are used to political histrionics in this country. But, the tenor of recent pronouncements – happening outside a period of an election campaign – has been nothing short of spectacular; outlandish, even.

A few literally have been trying to foment hysteria and fear with suggestions and innuendoes that an armed revolution could be imminent in Grenada; and that our pious nation, for the first time since our shores were invaded and occupied by Europeans, is about to plunge headlong into hell in a handbasket.

As well, it is so difficult to keep one’s own self on the straight and narrow path and on the right and righteous side of God, that we find it mindboggling that many still are able to preoccupy themselves with trying to save others – such as gays, lesbians, atheists and those who don’t share their religious beliefs – from damnation and from the wrath of the Almighty.

Just for one day this holiday season, and before we embark on a New York, and instead of self-righteous chest-thumping, let’s have a “Positive Vibrations’ Day’’; a day when we play only music with positive lyrics and we use the airwaves and media, in general, not to scaremonger and pull down, but to spread positive vibes and big up someone or something – God, our parents, children, spouses, teachers, animals, the sun, the moon or the stars. It would be a good way to honour Christ, upon whom we should focus as the reason for the season.

And, in keeping with this special season of goodwill, Caribupdate Weekly would like to wish all our nationals and visitors – from coast to coast, and across Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique – a very Merry Christmas and a bright and an extremely fruitful New Year 2015. May the peace of the Lord be with you now and forevermore.

God bless you all!
