CG James’ Statement on Hait

NEW YORK, January 13, 2010 – Consul General, Derrick James released the following statement regarding the earthquake in Haiti on Tuesday January 12th, 2010.

On behalf of the Grenadian Community in New York and the United States I would like to express our deepest sympathy for the victims of Tuesday’s earthquake in Haiti.

We are also saddened and concerned by reports of heavy infrastructural damage. Words cannot convey our sense of loss for the innocent victims. Our hearts and prayers are with them and the rescue workers who are frantically trying to save lives.

I called Consul General Felix Augustin on behalf of my colleagues in the Caribbean Consulate Corps to express our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who suffered death and destruction in the earthquake in Haiti.

President Preval and the Haitian government have our steadfast support as they assess the situation, search for survivors, comfort those affected, and move toward relief efforts.

I will be meeting with officials of GRENCAP United as well as colleagues in the Caribbean Consulate Corps to discuss relief aid to Port-au-Prince.

A Grenadian-born entrepreneur, Ellis Maitland, has agreed to use his premises as two drop-out points for relief for the people of Haiti.

The drop-out points are 569 Grand Avenue, between Dean & Bergen Streets and 773 Bergen Street, between Grand & Washington Avenues in Brooklyn, New York or contact the Consulate General of Grenada at 1 212 599 0301.

We understand the degree of the loss is inestimable especially at this very moment of uncertainty. However, we would like to ask Grenadians in the Diaspora to work in concert, supporting our efforts in coordinating with all related parties to undertake this matter.
