Celebrating a 102-year-old who still plants the land

St. George’s, Grenada, June 19, 2011 – Nora Peterson, a resident of Chantimelle in St. Patrick, is a very special person and citizen of the nation. She has achieved what few have and what many would like to lay claim to.

The venerable senior citizen, popularly referred to as Miss Nora, has just celebrated birthday number 102.

She marked the occasion with a big birthday bash that included close relatives and family members; Pastor Laurie McGuire, his immediate family and members of the Chantimelle Pentecostal Church; and Works Minister Joseph Gilbert, MP for St. Patrick West.

At 102, Ms. Nora isn’t showing any sign of slowing down. At the birthday get-together, she joined in the several toasts that were raised to her continued good health and strength.

Miss Nora, whose husband predeceased her many years ago, also bragged about the fact that she had already planted her garden with peas, and was awaiting another bumper crop this year.

As could be expected, Miss Nora was showered with many presents from the assembled gathering of guests; from family and friends, including MP Gilbert.

“It was a warm and touching occasion,’’ the Works Minister said afterwards. “Miss Nora is an icon, a mother figure in the community, and I pray that God will continue to bless her.’’

Miss Nora was born June 13, 1909. She raised three sons – two of her own and a third whom she adopted.

She lives in her own home, where she is cared for by a daughter-in-law and other family members.
